How to Prepare for a Job Interview

If you've been invited to an interview then congratulations, you've passed the first test. Job interviews are a little bit like exams; they creep up on you but if you prepare well in advance then you're more likely to succeed. We've collated our top job interview tips based off our industry knowledge to help you successfully conquer the hurdles of an interview.

There's nothing more embarrassing than walking into a job interview disorganised. The interviewer will assume you lack interest in the job. Who are their clients? Who are their main competitors? You could even research current trends relevant to the industry. Not only will this additional research show that you really want the job, you'll be able to hold a relevant conversation with the interviewer.

Interviews can bring out the nerves in even the most confident people and the last thing you want is to be faced with unexpected interview questions. Hate to sound cliche, however practice makes perfect. You can view our video on the most common interview questions and answers. Recreate the interview with a friend, your sister, your nephew to practice. If you're having trouble recalling your responses, our tip is to use cues in your notes to trigger what you want to talk about, such as 'football club' or 'management course'.

The last thing you want is to have done your company research and practiced your interview questions to only get a strike because you were late to your job interview. Try on your whole wardrobe, choose what you want to wear and iron out the creases the night before. Keep all your important documents such as your CV, cover letter, work or qualification certificates in one folder. And remember, being punctual is key so ensure that you plan your journey in advance with CityMapper so you arrive 15 minutes early. Let's face it, the trains are always late when you have somewhere important to go.
